Study of ecology, geography, geology,
history, archaeology, and allied subjects, in
the natural environment as opposed to the
laboratory. The Council for the Promotion of
Field Studies was established in Britain in
1943, in order to promote a wider knowledge
and understanding of the natural environment
among the public; Flatford Mill, Suffolk, was
the first of its research centres to be
opened.
